Protocols Terminology Change

We’re changing the terminology we use when we talk about integrating devices via protocols. The terms Master and Slave will no longer be used at RLE.

  • Devices communicating via Modbus will be referred to as Client and Server devices, in alignment with direction from the Modbus Organization, Inc.:
    • “The organization is using “client-server” to describe Modbus communications, characterized by communication between client device (s), which initiates communication and makes requests of server device(s), which process requests and return an appropriate response (or error message).”
  • Devices communicating via other protocols or integration methods will be referred to as Main and Secondary devices.

While much of our documentation has already been updated, we’re working through the rest of the updates as quickly as we can. Thank you for your patience and support as we complete this project.
